Teachers have not only the opportunity bu thte responsibility to teach students about IP. Plagarism is an issue plaguing middle and high schools across America. Educators can begin to address this rampant abuse by educating students on the subject. The Code of Technology Ethics for Educators, from UIUC, contains a Technology Code of Ethics created by a Curriculum, Technology and Educational Reform (CTER) class at the University of Illinois. Standard Two therein specifically states: "Educators have a respondibility to teach their students about intellectual property" (Weinert, 2001). The standard's rationale discusses the importance of explaining plagiarism to students, and suggests how best to model appropriate methods of attribution. It is important that students begin to understand the difference between reading and browsing when it comes to difital resources. Teachers should teach students to identify, manage and use resources.
In resources you will find several websites to help teachers address students on the subject of intellectual property.
